Metab Hussain, Trainee Solicitor, Employment Department
Metab Hussain (First year trainee, Employment Department)

Degree: LLB Law Degree at Nottingham Law School
Work Experience: My legal work experience consisted of a placement year during my undergraduate degree at a medium sized law firm in Manchester. I was also the Lexis Nexis Butterworth’s Student Associate for Nottingham Law School. I completed a mini pupillage at a Chambers in Leeds and volunteer placements at an orphanage in Cambodia and tsunami relief work in Indonesia.
Hobbies: Playing squash, Running/Hiking, 5 a side football, Travelling: South East Asia, Australasia, South America, Middle East….. Africa (soon, I hope!)
I am in the first year of my training contract and almost at the end of my first seat which is in the employment department. I am soon to move to commercial litigation where my esteemed colleague Tom, will be passing on the baton.
I have dealt with a wide variety of employment matters (contentious and non-contentious) under the supervision of a partner and two senior solicitors.
Typically work includes:
- dealing with unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal and disability discrimination tribunal claims
- redundancy and TUPE issues/advice
- drafting contracts of employment and policies
- providing advice to clients on all manner of employment queries ranging from how to lawfully dismiss an employee to maternity leave issues.
I was given a good deal of responsibility and direct involvement with clients at an early stage of my seat. I have client contact on a daily basis, whether it is through our HR support telephone service, email or face to face. I have been encouraged to get involved with client work, including working on a collective redundancy situation which was time critical.
In addition, the trainees are encouraged to participate in business development and networking activities, from participating in seminars we host, joining an external networking scheme to attending other professionals’ events and Tees Valley Law Society events.
This may seem daunting to any prospective trainee, but here at the Endeavour Partnership there is a network of approachable solid support around you. This, coupled with an open door policy, makes it a fantastic place to train.
I decided to apply to the Endeavour Partnership because it was nominated for “best trainer”, for two successive years. I thought the training would be to an excellent standard and I have not been disappointed.
I knew I wanted to practice commercial law, ideally in Teesside, where I have strong roots. Endeavour was the ideal choice, providing legal advice to businesses based in the Tees valley and beyond.
When researching Endeavour, I was struck by the straight forward application process which is designed to bring the best out of any candidate. There are no unnecessary hoops to jump through. I believed that this reflected the firm’s no nonsense approach in contrast to many other firms who claim to be “different”.
